The global cosmetics company, Revlon, has propelled itself onto the social media stage, with the launch of its Twitter page.

The colour cosmetics firm said the timing behind the launch coincided with the upcoming New York Fashion Week, and described its entrance into the social media platform as “fashionably late.”

Revlon has promised to use Twitter to inform customers of exclusive news at the Paris and London Fashion weeks, and has boasted an array of celebrity ‘tweeters’ in the upcoming weeks following the site’s launch.

It will also be giving away a new shade of Super Lustrous Lipstick to its first 500 followers, in a bid to attract consumers.

Social media potential for cosmetics companies

Raphael Viton from innovations agency, Maddock Douglas, told CosmeticsDesign.com that social media needs to be utilised effectively by cosmetics companies.

If a brand is to use social media correctly, they need to avoid traditional marketing techniques, and engage in a two-way dialogue with its consumers, Viton explained.

Many cosmetics firms have used facebook, Youtube, and Twitter to gain valuable feedback from consumers, and it has been used as an effective marketing tool.

Viton believes that larger organisations have not unlocked its full potential, and still use the medium to inform customers and market their products using traditional methods, rather than engaging in this new form of marketing.

Rise in social media

The rise of social media was a key focus earlier in the year at the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit and demonstrated various case studies and tips on how beauty companies can successfully build their brand by utilising social media.

Online company, Swedish Skin, is the most recent example of success, using Facebook and Youtube to generate user response and producing its whole marketing campaign through this medium.

The launch of Revlon’s global Twitter page follows on from a successful Revlon UK Twitter account set up last year; CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com was informed by a UK spokesperson.

Revlon can be followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/Revlon.
