University of Cincinnati adds a new degree program for cosmetic scientists

The Ohio school has been educating cosmetic scientists with degree programs in its pharmaceutical science department since the 1970s.

Dual degree options for cosmetic science

The University of Cincinnati offers several degree options in cosmetic science, including conventional MS and PhD programs.

This latest beauty science degree offering is a dual degree option in chemical engineering and cosmetic science. “We usually have a number of chemical engineering students who are interested in careers related to cosmetic science,” ​says Stephen Thiel, Director of the undergraduate chemical engineering program at UC, who’s quoted in a UC news post about the new program.

“And,” ​he adds, “I’m thrilled to have this new opportunity for them.” ​BS-MS students in the new program will study chemical engineering as usual and add cosmetic course work to their schedule in their third year, according to the UC news post. Students in the new program will also have the option of having their work-experience co-op semesters be focused on cosmetics as well.  

Beauty science is always multidisciplinary

“Cosmetic science is a multidisciplinary area that requires expertise in a wide range of disciplines such as chemistry, chemical engineering, biological sciences, human studies, formulation science, toxicology and human and environmental safety,”​ explains Kavssery Ananthapadmanabhan (Ananth), Professor and Director of the Cosmetic Science Program at UC’s Winkle College of Pharmacy.

And UC’s newest dual degree program, he says, is one more way to get ready for future work opportunities in the beauty industry: “The new BS-MS program prepares our graduates with expertise in all the relevant areas so that they can hit the ground running.”​
