Cosmetics Design has created an interactive timeline of the major news stories on job losses, corporate failure and restructuring in the cosmetics industry over the past six months to give readers a new perspective on the impact of the economic crisis.

The timeline allows you to get an overview of the chronology of events, discover news you missed and read in-depth articles on each twist and turn.

You can scroll from left to right by dragging with the left mouse button or use the bar at the bottom, zoom in and out with the tool at the top and click on any bubble to find more information. Within each bubble there is a brief description of the news story and a link to the complete article at the bottom.

The timing of the economic crisis became immediately obvious when looking through our archives. Although Henkel and Unilever had announced major restructuring plans in the year building up to the recession, references to job losses are hard to find before the fall.

From October cosmetics manufacturers and suppliers began to implement cost cutting plans and news of plant closures, job losses and discontinued product lines then began to roll in.

As the timeline shows, a cluster of announcements were made in December, but news of restructuring plans has continued to the present day. Revlon announced 400 job losses at the end of last month and P&G said last week that it would be kissing goodbye to Max Factor in the US.
