The cosmetic dermatologist is the first to receive the award, which was added to the organization’s awards program just the year. The Florence Wall Women in Cosmetic Chemistry Award recognizes the technical, leadership, and business achievements of women working in the cosmetics and personal care industry.

The Florence Wall Women in Cosmetic Chemistry Award came into being under the leadership of Kelly Dobos, cosmetics technical manager for the Americas region at Sun Chemical, and this year’s president of the SCC—the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.

“The sciences have historically been male dominated and nearly all of the SCC Awards were named after men, but we’re seeing a shift in diversity,” pointed out Dobos, in an interview with industry media earlier this year, adding, “I hope this award is inspiring to chemists looking to make their mark in the industry.”

In creating the new award, Dobos said her goal is “to specifically acknowledge the contributions of women in the field of cosmetic science and the legacy of Florence E. Wall.”

Wall herself “was a recognized authority in the cosmetic science industry and authored a text on the science of hair dye in which she coined the industry term ‘canitics’ – the art and science of hair dyeing. Florence continued to write throughout her career, publishing 5 books and more than 300 articles,” according to the SCC site. Wall was also, noted Dobos in her interview with industry media, “instrumental in the development of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.”

Zoe Diana Draelos to receive the SCC’s first Florence Wall Women in Cosmetic Chemistry Award

“Much like the namesake of this award, Dr. Draelos has made significant technical contributions in the cosmetic science field,” say Dobos in a media release posted by the SCC. And, “I am excited to present this inaugural award to her during the Society’s 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting on December 17, 2019 at the Sheraton NY Times Square,” she says. (Learn more about the upcoming meeting and find a link to register to attend, here.)

Draelos is a working clinical and research dermatologist based in High Point, North Carolina. There, she and her team work to develop and test new beauty care products “including moisturizers, cleansers, sunscreens, shampoos, oral supplements, skin devices, and anti-aging technologies;” dermatologic drugs; and FDA-approved devices, according to her website.

Among her accomplishments and credentials, Draelos “has authored 14 books, contributed chapters to 38 textbooks, written 78 posters and 541 published papers, served as principal investigator on 621 studies, delivered 350+ oral presentations, and served on or contributed to 38 editorial boards,” according to the SCC release. “Zoe is [also] a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and has been honored by numerous industry organizations for her contributions to dermatology and for her research contributions to advance the specialty.”
