DNA profiling paving the way in personalised beauty

Bespoke beauty treatments based on the individual's genetic code are no longer a notion of the future. Here, Cosmetics Design looks at what biotech companies are doing to advance the segment.

The segment really came to the forefront in 2012 when it was revealed that biotech firms had been working on human genome cloud based genetics for cosmetics applications.

Then the breakthrough had been in determining individual genetic codes, which ultimately opened the door for all sorts of personalised cosmetic treatments.

Two years on, thanks to advances in technology, developments in the area are full steam ahead as it's now cheaper and quicker to analyse cells.

Provider of cloud-based genetic analytics services geneOnyx has a concept that helps to identify topical agents an individual may need or metabolise better. 

The company has been working with cosmetics and skin care companies to make this technology available to consumers over the counter for two years.

According to gene­Onyx, the analysis can reveal whether the body has a propensity to hang on to collagen, a protein that keeps skin looking plump and youthful or breaks it down.

How it works

The test harnesses patented rapid DNA detection technology from Imperial College London spin-out DNA Electronics to provide an individually-tailored recommendation service for selecting the best cosmetic products for individuals based on a scientific analysis of how well a person’s body will react to active product ingredients.

The on-the-spot service works via a saliva sample test, which delivers purified DNA to a microchip that simultaneously amplifies, using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and detects genetic signatures in the DNA.

UK based Organic Pharmacy announced it had teamed up with the group to offer what it referred to as the world’s first in-store DNA anti-ageing test to help match customers’ skin care to their genetics. 

The DNA microchip is plugged into a cloud-connected gateway device linked to CosMos, geneOnyx’s patent pending cloud-based analysis engine, and the genetic test results are analysed to provide a personalised shortlist of skin care products most appropriate and effective to the individual within 30 minutes.
