DaniMer claims industry first with adhesive that eliminates PET problems

DaniMer Scientific has developed a biobased label adhesive that it says eliminates problems associated with PET container recycling and enables increased end of life functionality and value.

“This is the first hot melt adhesive in the world that is both renewable in content and completely dissolves in the PET recycling wash process,” a company spokesperson told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

The label is said to contain more than 50 percent renewable content and dissolves in polyethylene terephthalate flake caustic wash recycling operations ‘without clumps or stickies.’

“We have been actively engaged with our target market in order to understand what our consumers need, and the issue of PET contamination was a recurring and significant matter that needed to be resolved,” says CEO Daniel Carraway.

Whilst in the developmental stage, the company revealed it partnered up with DuPont Tate & Lyle for the use of its bio-based propanediol (PDO) Susterrra, and Myriant for the use of its bio-succinic acid.

“DaniMer’s new adhesive is a great example of the innovation and market opportunities available with bio-based chemicals,” says CEO Myriant, Stephen J. Gatto.

DaniMer is to provide more of the product's details at the Nova-Pack 2012 Conference in Arlington, Virginia, an exhibition that gives packaging suppliers a chance to display products that overcome challenges faced with the PET recycling.

Greener Package Awards

The annual 'Greener Package Awards' is the first independent global competition focused on packaging sustainability, judged by a panel of industry experts acknowledging companies for their commitment to sustainability.

In total, the event features five categories, FDA-regulated industries; Non-FDA-regulated industries; Transport/large-format packaging; Packaging machinery; and lastly, Beyond the Package Award.

PET packaging company APPE, won the ‘Beyond the Package’ award last year for its initiatives in recycled PET production and its 100 per cent remanufacture of material into packaging applications.

This particular award is aimed at companies with packaging initiatives or processes that contribute to sustainability by going beyond the development of an individual package.

Then Martin Hargreaves, APPE’s General Manager said; “We are delighted to receive the award, over the years, we have consistently demonstrated our commitment to environmental responsibility in many different ways… All of this clearly showcases the major role recycled PET can play in an effective sustainability programme."
