Switzerland-based fine chemicals specialist Clariant says it has taken a leading role in the Phase One REACH compliance and is aiming for the same with Phase Two.

“Our achievement in completing Phase One registration inside the deadline required a lot of long, hard work, and an intensive use of resources,” said Clairant CEO, Harioff Kottmann.

Reach compliance is crucial to chemical players operating throughout Europe, many of whom supply raw materials, fine chemicals and ingredients to the cosmetics and personal care industry.

Clariant claims it is in a strong position for REACH compliance, thanks to its expertise in the fields of toxicological, ecotoxicolgoical and physical chemical assessments – all areas which have proved crucial to compliance for Phase One and will also be important for Phase Two.

Leading the way with Phase One compliance

After years of work, Clariant met the deadline requirements set for December 1, 2010, successfully registering 152 substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), based in Helsinki, Finland.

The company says that during the compliance of Phase One it managed to take an industry-leading position by taking a primary position in 81 of the 152 consortia and Substance Information Exchange Forums it was involved in.

These 152 substances covered finished products, intermediates and raw materials in eight different business units, the company said.

Lining up for Phase Two compliance

Now the company is turning its attentions to Phase Two compliance. This concerns substances supplied at less than 100 tons per annum which have to comply with the stipulated regulations by June 1, 2013.

We gained considerable experience during Phase One of REACH,” comments Ulrich Kussmaul, head of Clariant’s product stewardship.

“However, Clariant will have to meet the challenge to get a higher amount of substances registered in Phase Two. Our Product Stewardship organisation teams are ready to go ahead and to meet this challenge both as lead registrant as well as a reliable partner within consortia to complete the task in hand within the deadline.”
