Many beauty manufacturers, suppliers and retailers have made important sustainability pledges for this coming decade, but as efforts kickstart in shifting linear business models to circular ways of working, there remains a raft of challenges along the entire supply chain.

Aiming for a climate neutral future

In January, last year, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told attendees at the World Economic Forum 2020 that the European Union would do “whatever it takes” to the unlock investment, innovation and creativity needed to become climate neutral by 2050.

The EU, Von der Leyen said, was on a mission to become the world’s first climate neutral continent.

This goal was detailed in the EC’s European Green Deal – a programme containing a raft of world-reaching measures, guidelines and regulatory reforms aimed at shifting industrial strategies in the EU towards circular business models and clean technologies. And in March 2020, as part of this programme, the EC unveiled its latest Circular Economy Action Plan for Europe that precisely detailed the legislative and non-legislative measures that would be taken on circularity in the coming years.

For the beauty industry, this plan had the “potential to be transformative”, according to John Chave, director-general of trade association Cosmetics Europe, but it would not be without its challenges.

So, what does the circular business model look like for beauty?

Given ‘circularity’ has become an increasingly important word worldwide, for industry and consumers alike, CosmeticsDesign has decided to rally together leading experts in the field to dig into what this all means for the international beauty industry.

Our webinar Circular beauty - Sustainable sourcing | Green chemistry | Eco-design on Wednesday 14th April will address important and current issues in this conversation, putting tough questions to our esteemed panel of industry experts.

Just what exactly does circular beauty mean? What areas of the supply chain does this concept impact? How much work has already been achieved? And what still needs to be done?
