Diamond Packaging has turned to wind power, weight loss and recyclable materials to create a greener package for Highland Lilac Perfume.

Highland Lilac chose the packaging company to produce the carton for its perfume. To improve the environmental credentials of the perfume Diamond changed both the package itself and the manufacturing process behind it.

Diamond used recyclable paperboard made from a renewable source and then used wind energy to manufacture the carton.

Wind energy policy

For over a year Diamond has been using wind energy bought from Community Energy for all its energy requirements.

The wind energy purchase is part of Diamond’s “greenbox initiative”, a company commitment to researching, designing, and implementing packaging solutions that are innovative and sustainable.

The company claims the environmental benefit of using wind energy during the production of the Highland Lilac packaging is equal to offsetting about 2295 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Reducing packaging weight

Efforts were also made to cut material use and reduce the weight of the package in order to reduce energy and raw material use.

The weight of the carton was cut by 60 percent compared to the previous version. This reduction was achieved thanks to a 25 percent decrease in paperboard and the elimination of PVC plastic.

Changes to the design also helped reduce the environmental impact of the package. Diamond opted for a straight tuck carton design featuring an integrated insert that secures the bottle inside and therefore removes the need for a separate compartment.
