In her Indie Beauty Profile biochemist, microbiologist, practicing ophthalmologist, and long-time beauty innovator Lili Fan, Founder and President of Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care, shares insight into the growing microbiome beauty movement and succinct advice on what it takes to build a brand that standouts in the marketplace.

Countless indie beauty brands can be described as clean, green, natural, safe, vegan, etc. But brands that can do this and push skin care chemistry and the industry standards of product function and efficacy forward are even more remarkable. With her latest brand, Dr. Lili Fan is aiming to do just that. Here, she shares a profile of herself and the brand.

Name: Lili Fan, President

Indie Beauty Company: Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care

Launched: 2016

Headquarters: Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Cash flow: I’ve funded the Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care brand myself with no outside founds.   And I own 100% of the business.

A few months after we launched this innovative line on our website, the sales went up on a daily basis.  Word of mouth goes a long way. Without spending marketing money, we achieved what we expected.

Indie how? To me, an indie brand is independently founded and operated by founders who incorporate their beauty expertise, skills, and passion into the DNA of the brand.  The most important part is the founder’s ability to be involved from ingredients to formulation and through to the finished products—this maintains the product’s integrity and scientific performance.

Team work: 10 full-time employees and 12 part-time

Distribution: Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care is sold globally through our own ecommerce site www.drlilifan.com and on Amazon.com as well as at some selected retailers like: Time for me.

Years in beauty: 25

Year at Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care: 4

Entrepreneurial experience: Before this, I founded Luksus Cosmetics, which is a professional skin care line with a full arrangement of retail, back bar, and treatment products. It is specially distributed at doctors’ offices and medial spas.

The business: What’s good for the inside is even better for the outside. With vegan probiotics from Dr Lili Fan Probiotic Skin Care, each formula is made with a peptide strain that captures the strength of probiotics to deliver good-for-skin properties. Similar to the probiotics used in yogurts, vegan probiotics works to keep skin’s systems regulated, healthy, and strong. We’ve created the newest anti-aging science and it’s found in one of the oldest natural preservatives known to humanity.

The science: Our probiotic cocktail of lactobacillus bifidus is fused with lipopeptides to help stimulate skin’s immune system. Beta defensin glucans combine to produce anti-inflammatory properties, activating dermal cells for skin that’s even, firm, smooth, younger-looking and rested. Probiotics have also been shown to help calm conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rashes, skin allergies, acne and more. When combined with its anti-aging power, the cumulative result defines true beauty.

The wow-factor: Our probiotic skin care is the first professional line of anti-aging products formulated to harness the power of natural probiotics and botanicals to give you firmer, smoother and younger-looking skin.

The consumer: People who want to have natural and clean products with instant results

Milestone moment: We have received an overwhelming amount of compliments. The compliments from our customers make us so humble and proud.

Advice for fellow beauty entrepreneurs: Innovation is key.

Just one: Asked about her go-to product Fan says, I have very sensitive skin; and I have tried most commercial products on the market.  So far, there are none that work for me.  So, I basically make everything from skin care to foundation myself.
