Best known for its animal-free collagen ingredients, the biodesign company has now leveraged its platform to create human elastin for use as a topical skin care ingredient.

Geltor came on to the beauty ingredient scene in 2018 with the launch of Collume. And in 2019 the company introduced HumaColl21. Those two ingredients are human-identical collagens made using biotechnology.

Geltor specializes in protein production. “So much of how life works comes down to how great proteins work,” Alex Lorestani, Geltor Co-Founder and CEO, tells Cosmetics Design. It’s intriguing, he says, “how thrifty nature is to pack so many functions into a class of proteins.”

But without biodesign technologies, sourcing or manufacturing proteins—that are both vegan and halal—for use in skin care product formulations is challenging, to say the least.

And even with Geltor’s biodesign capabilities, it takes close to 12 months to bring a new protein from concept to commercial production, says Lorestani.

Geltor launches a human-identical elastin skin care ingredient

Today, Geltor announced the launch of Elastapure, a human-identical elastin for use in skin care formulations.

“A key element of human skin, elastin brings the gift of elasticity through its unique ability as a protein to stretch and recoil,” explains the company website. “Through Elastapure™, Geltor has unlocked the world’s only pure human elastin ingredient for topical skincare, available for the first time in unmatched purity and biocompatibility.”

Geltor is making custom proteins for the beauty market

Not only is Geltor developing proteins for the beauty ingredient marketplace at large, the company also partners with individual beauty manufacturers and brands to develop custom proteins.

Getltor’s Custom Services initiative “enables brands to work closely with the company’s biodesign team to rapidly produce unique bioactives for use in products lines across cosmetics, food and beverage, and dietary supplement, from concept to commercialization,” according to today’s media release.

This program also takes about 12 months from concept to commercialization, says Lorestani, adding that “getting it right in product development is so important.” He tells Cosmetics Design that while Geltor “tends to work…with large, stable companies that will deploy the ingredient across their entire enterprise and eventually globally, even the biggest brands start with a pilot launch.” So Geltor is equipped to run a 1kg ingredient pilot and scale that up to hundreds of tons per year.

“With the launch of Elastapure, Geltor continues to establish itself as the ingredient and innovation partner of choice for leading consumer brands,” Lorestani tells the press. “The response to our technology from customers and end users alike has beenenergizing. Whether through the purchase of an ‘off-the-shelf’ portfolio ingredient likeElastapure, or through Geltor’s custom services, we’ve been able to provide a seamlesssolution for brands wanting novel bioactives that align with their values. It’s been incrediblyrewarding to see these partnerships give rise to products consumers can’t get enough of.”
