In a blog item posted online this past Sunday, Sandra Cosma, the beauty maker’s Manager of Future Innovation, announced plans to expand Avon’s new vegan Distillery collection to include a product formulated with CBD.

“We are always researching emerging ingredients to understand what superior benefits they can offer,” writes Sandra Cosma, Manager of Future Innovation at Avon.

“CBD is a hot trend,” she says, “but we’ve been fascinated with the cannabis plant for a long time – it’s such a powerhouse. We’re making sure that we capitalise on all its amazing benefits for the best possible performance in our products.”

Avon to launch Batch 420 CBD Oil as part of the Distillery skin care collection

Avon has already launched a 3 skin and body care products in a new line called the Cannabis Sativa Oil Collection. That line comprises a cleanser, a day cream as well as a hand and body balm.

In the near future, Avon will introduce a CBD oil. The company is adding Batch 420 CBD Oil to its new vegan Distillery collection. The oil will be formulated with not only CBD but also sugar-cane derived squalane, according to Cosma’s blog post.

The forthcoming CBD oil will not include any “unnecessary” ingredients; and “it promises to deeply hydrate and promote radiance for visibility healthier skin,” writes Cosma.

Avon zeros in on key skin care benefits or CBD

While CBD has been trendy in the beauty space for years now. Legacy brands, owned by multinational cosmetics and personal care companies, have been slow to move into CBD for both regulatory reasons and claims / benefits. Not much reliable data exists on the skin care benefits of topically applied CBD (mostly because of the restrictions on clinical testing).

But according to this week’s blog post, “Avon conducted an exclusive study to find that CBD helps boost Heat Shock Proteins, the body’s natural de-stressing proteins that help protect skin from stress.”

Such data sets the company up to make claims very much in line with consumer understanding that CBD is provides calming or stress relief benefits.

In her blog post, Cosma is careful to point out that hemp seed oil has entirely different skin care benefits. “Cannabis sativa seed oil is also high in antioxidants, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, but it contains no CBD.  It’s a powerful moisturiser that doesn’t clog pores and soothes and calms skin for irritation and redness reduction.”
