The Michigan-based commodity chemical company was on hand at the first Uplink Live event of 2020, meeting with indie brand leaders and showcasing a single ingredient: ACULYN Siltouch Rheology Modifier.

Cosmetics Design caught up with Verna Talcott, the North American Marketing Manager for Personal Care at Dow, during Uplink Live late last month to discuss the advantages of using Aculyn Siltouch in personal care product formulations.

How one ingredient can lower energy use

The ingredient, says Talcott, “enables low-carbon-footprint formulations and is very easy to use; you don’t have to neutralize it; you don’t have to cool or add any heat….Customers can walk away making a product by hand.”

Traditional lotion or cream formulations, explains Talcott, often incorporate waxes or butters. And because of those inputs, the production process of such a personal care product requires careful heating and cooling—processes that require time and energy.

Aculyn Siltouch, by contract, allows a product to be made by blending two liquids: an oil and, for instance, a hydrosol.

How Dow is connecting with indie beauty brands

Dow has a long history of supplying ingredients to personal care, cosmetics, and fragrance manufactures (as well as to numerous other industries).

Now not multinational chemical company is reaching out to indie beauty brands with information and inputs that were previously unavailable to most beauty startups and emerging brands: “What we’re trying to do [by exhibiting at Uplink Live] is inform the brand founders of who Dow is and the fact that we are here for them, to provide them innovation, award-winning ingredients, as well as expertise,” Talcott tells Cosmetics Design.

“And we’re here to also inspire them with our prototype formulations that are based on trends around the world,” she says. Watch the full video interview at the top of the page to learn more.
