The brand’s acne treatment technology, developed and manufactured by Cosmetic Research Lab, was recently granted a US patent. And Skin Sanity is positioning its skin care product line (formulated with the unique technology) as a clean beauty alternative to benzoyl peroxide.

Skin Sanity is owned by Nashville, Tennessee – based Tomorrow’s Leaf, a green chemistry company that went into business just last year and is affiliated with R&D specialist Cosmetic Research Lab.

The direct-to-consumer brand sells a range of skin care products including, cleanser, serums, night cream, SPF day cream, a selection of treatment products likes masks and exfoliators, as well as a body moisturizer.

“Our products are able to fill a gap and satisfy consumers who want authentic, healthy, environmentally friendly clean beauty products that don’t compromise quality or performance,” asserts Paul Drake, CEO and founder of Skin Sanity, in a media release about the new patent. “Because we manufacture and own the exclusive right to all our formulas,” says Drake, “we can offer unparalleled value to our customers and business partners.”

Processing plant extracts

To arrive at the newly patented  technology (US20180110815), Cosmetic Research Lab tested various combinations of close to 300 botanical inputs. What they’ve patented is a blend of black current extract and pine needle extract.

In combination and thanks to an in-house extract processing technique, the resulting ingredient is said to “help stimulate (increase) the growth of protective bacteria and at the same time, inhibit (decrease) the unwanted acne causing bacteria. Overall, this approach balances the skin microflora to healthier levels,” explains the Cosmetic Research Lab site. And the company notes that “Clinical studies including human trials have shown this technology can effectively kill 99.99% of acne-causing bacteria in 30 seconds.”

Capitalizing on ingredient trends

Tomorrow’s Leaf isn’t leveraging only microbiome beauty with its prebiotic skin care products. The brand also has plans to launch supplements this year, as well as essential oils under the brand Flowering Pharmacy and ingestable CBD products as part of a product line called Wellness Support.
