Today the fragrance maker is debuting new olfaction sensor technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. International Flavors & Fragrances has worked with digital scent technology before, but the current partnership with Aryballe speeds the company’s digital progress.

Grenoble, France - based Aryballe makes bio-inspired sensors and describes itself as a digital olfaction company. Aryballe does work with the food and beverages industry, with the auto industry on indoor air quality, and with the fragrance and cosmetics industry, “standardizing sensory evaluations and supporting QC testers,” according to the company site.

In partnership

Together IFF and Aryballe are working on miniature sensors and an eventual platform that the beauty industry can use for quality control as well as odor sensing.

“Our partnership with IFF will enable us to accelerate our technology’s development into miniature, affordable olfaction sensors that meet the needs of their unique markets,” Sam Guilaumeì, CEO at Aryballe, tells the press. “We’re excited about the growth potential we have together,” he adds.

Innovation

Besides the real-world functionality of the Aryballe sensors and the applications they can and will support, the novelty of innovation is important to IFF too.

“Our passion for pioneering firsts is uniquely aligned with Aryballe’sapproach to technology,” says Andreas Fibig, IFF’s chairman and CEO. “We see exciting potentials for digital scent platforms across our business and look forward to exploring the many possibilities that this device creates for us and our customers.”

Aryballe has only been a company since 2014 and presumably has a lot more to contribute in terms of olfaction sensor technology and the internet of things more broadly; which is an attractive scenario for a forward-thinking company like IFF.

“Our innovation team is thrilled to work with Aryballe on evolving this innovative device to one that is indispensable to the F&F space,” says Nicolas Mirzayantz, CEO of the IFF scent division, in a media release about the partnership. “We believe that we are only scratching the surface of its potential for our industry – its applications seem virtually limitless!”
