Firmenich expands natural fragrance ingredients portfolio in deal with Nelixia
The two companies announced a strategic partnership this week that will allow Guatemala-based Nelixia to expand its already renowned essential oils business and enable Firmenich to provide its flavors and fragrance customers with more natural raw materials.

In the fragrance industry, Nelixia is known for supplying carbon-neutral essential oils like cardamom, Peru balsam, styrax, and patchouli. The company got its start in 2009 and has been dedicated to running a sustainable business all along, one that benefits the industry as well as the people in its producing communities.

“Since the production of our first essential oils back in 2010, our constant ambition has been to place sustainability at the heart of our operations,” ​affirms Elisa Aragon, co-founder and CEO of Nelixia, in a media release about the company’s new strategic partnership.

“Firmenich’s passion for naturals and commitment to the sustainable livelihoods of the local communities, made them an ideal partner, enabling us to multiply our impact across Central America,”​ explains Aragon. “Taking our vision to the next level, we’re looking forward to diversifying our raw materials portfolio, while scaling up our positive impact across our farming communities.”

Bigger and better together

The two companies have worked together before; but the new deal adds Nelixia to Firmenich’s roster of Naturals Together partners.  To date, the Naturals Together initiative “represents 170 species, supplied by 100 producers, locally sourced in 40 countries, contributing to the sustainable livelihoods of 250,000 families,”​ according to the release.

Now also, Nelixia executives will be able to expand the business and source or cultivate more natural raw materials for fragrance makers.

And Patrick Firmenich, chairman of the privately owned fragrance company, explains why the Nelixia partnership is as much about ethics as it is about ingredients: “Nelixia has established itself as a leader in certified essential oils, with a reputation for producing some of the best cardamom in the world. Building on our longstanding relationship and shared values, we look forward to giving our customers access to Central America’s unique breadth of natural ingredients in the most ethical, sustainable and traceable way.”
