One of the key areas where the beauty industry can make easy sustainability wins is packaging.

We take a look at some of the most exciting innovations and technologies in this space.

Sustainable packaging goes right to the top of the agenda for beauty and personal care players, big and small.

Indeed, Unilever has made the bold commitment that by 2025, it will ensure that it is technically possible for its plastic packaging to be reused or recycled.

In this special feature, we take a look at where technology is moving in this area.

Biodegradable packaging

Biodegradable plastics offer innovative solutions to improve recycling quality, according to recent studies.

Indeed, they offer a crucial way of efficient waste separation that can facilitate better recycling of packaging.

Details of one key recent study can be found here.

As Unilever’s CEO Paul Polman said of FMCGs industries’ use of plastic: “It is clear that if we want to continue to reap the benefits of this versatile material, we need to do much more as an industry to help ensure it is managed responsibly and efficiently post consumer-use.”

Cleantech potential: bionic wood example

WooDoo is a cleantech player that has created ‘bionic wood’. Its patented tech follows over half a decade of research, and consists of a new wood material: waterproof, 300% more stiff, fire-retardant and translucent.

Based on the circular economy principles, this material is “about to make a change in the construction industry, tackling tomorrow’s zero net carbon cities,” according to Climate KIC.

In presenting at the recent ADF&PCD industry event in Paris, WooDoo made clear it is also looking to offer packaging solutions for beauty players looking to make a sustainable shift.

Connecting suppliers with projects & brands

Tech players have recently recognised the potential of creating programmes to better connect companies in developing and sourcing their packaging.

Packitoo is one such solution. It is a sourcing platform for all types of packaging, including boxes, shopping bags, labels, bottles, gifts & premiums, cardboard, paper, glass, metal, fabrics,

The model works by linking brands with packaging suppliers, as a B2B (business to business) portal.
