In his Indie Beauty Profile, Terry Zickerman, CEO of Love Sun Body, explains why he sees alternative ingredients and the challenge of developing more globally compliant personal care products as an opportunity for indie brands.

As more consumers take a closer interest in personal care and beauty product ingredients, some have come to believe that Europe’s regulations (when compared to those here in the US) are a better guideline for determining product safety. New brands are taking full advantage of that preconception, formulating and marketing to meet consumer demand. As Zickerman likes to say about his newly launched sun care brand, “summer’s coming and so is Love Sun Body.”

Entrepreneurial experience: ​After working in finance for 24 years, I left Morgan Stanley in March 2017 to dedicate all of my time to Love Sun Body.

The business: ​All of Love Sun Body’s 100% Natural Origin Mineral Sunscreens are green, safe, and effective. Following 5 years of research and development, we created sunscreens that are more advanced than anything else on the market.

The wow-factor: ​We have created luxurious feeling broad spectrum mineral sunscreens, with the esthetic texture of a prestige skin care lotion, with a moisturizing matte finish and all of our formulas are non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic. And, Love Sun Body 100% Natural Origin Mineral Sunscreens meet the regulatory requirements of the FDA OTC Monograph System and the European Commission’s recommendation on UVA protection.

Milestone moment:​ Over 10,000 followers on social media in the last few months, pre-launch.

Advice for fellow indie beauty entrepreneurs: ​There are thousands of companies that formulate and re-formulate by committee. These ‘new and improved’ products still contain hazardous ingredients. The acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon is not a fad. It is the trend. While Europe is twenty years ahead of America in using safer and higher quality ingredients, this is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to create new products and brands that consumers are yearning for.
