Airless technology for anti-agers fuels lotion pump demand
Plastic lotion pumps are the fastest growing closure type in the beauty segment as liquid soap booms and the demand for airless technology for anti-aging applications fuels growth.

“Lotion pumps are one of the fastest growing closure types in beauty products and there are key factors that support these good performances and drive volume sales,” explains Regina Maiseviciute, Senior Packaging Analyst at Euromonitor International.

Anti-aging

Anti-aging creams are having an impact on the market, according to the analyst. Traditionally these products can usually be found with screw closures; however, pumps are being added to this category as a way to dispense expensive products with precision.

“Anti-agers are an example of the success of lotion pumps,” continues Maiseviciute.

“Anti-agers, in general, is a very dynamic product category, generating high value sales, and currently plastic screw closures on glass jars remains the major closure type for this product category. However, lotion pumps are gaining popularity and mainly due to the application of airless technology.”

Airless technology

Airless pumps allow the dispensing of a product in a very precise dosage, and are the system of choice for products that are often very expensive.

These systems also dispense the product without air intake and prevent the product from discoloration or drying.

“It is expected that lotion pumps will perform really well in the forecast period (2013) as well and it will also be coupled, not only with the application of airless technology, but also with the development of products with natural expensive ingredients being paraben-free or containing less preservatives,” adds Maiseviciute.

Liquid soaps

Liquid soaps are also a key driver of growth for this dispensing category. Liquid soap is predicted to be very popular in 2013, performing better than even bar soap, according to Euromonitor.

“Lotion pumps are a key closure for liquid soaps. In 2012 they accounted for more than 800 million units globally in retail,” says Maiseviciute.
