Momentive adds ingredients for sun care, skin care and color cosmetics to silicones portfolio

Momentive Performance materials has added to its portfolio of silicones for personal care products with two new emulsifiers and two new film formers for sun care, skin care and color cosmetics.

SilForm 60-A emulsifier is said to be a highly stabilizing water-in-oil emulsifier. Momentive notes that compared to standard products, it contains a significantly higher concentration of polyether silicone copolymer and can thus “achieve high levels of actives in a gentle carrier, while improving wash-off resistance and remaining aesthetically pleasing.”​

Enhanced water repellency and silky soft after feel​

According to the company, the emulsifier helps to enhance water repellency in sun care, skin care and color cosmetics, give a soft silky after feel in sun care and skin care formulations and heighten durability in all areas.

Performance tests were carried out to compare the viscosity profile of W/O-sunscreens made with SilForm 60-A emulsifier and SF1540 emulsifier.  Those formulated with SilForm 60-A emulsifier demonstrated shear thinning behavior, according to Momentive, which it says is essential for cosmetics lotions and creams.

Meanwhile, Silform EOF emulsion is a water-in-oil emulsifier that is made without propylene or ethylene oxide and can form stable emulsions with many cosmetic oils. Momentive also notes that its high active content and low usage level may offer cost-effectiveness.

Like SilForm 60-A emulsifier, Silform EOF emulsion can also be used in hair styling products and antiperspirants in addition to sun care, skin care and color cosmetics products.

Expansion of film formers range​

Momentive has also expanded its range of film formers with the launch of SilForm FR-10 and SilForm FR-5 fluids. The company says these fluids form a highly flexible film on the skin that provides long-lasting comfort in addition to water and oil resistance, therefore extending product durability (of facial and color cosmetics in particular).

Momentive indicates that in tests undertaken to measure water and oil resistance, SilForm FR-10/SilForm FR-5 fluids were shown to exhibit improved oil repellency in comparison to other silicone film-formers that were evaluated, as well as providing excellent water repellency.

In tests performed on synthetic skin to establish film flexibility, the company notes that the additives demonstrated excellent flexibility, similar to an MT resin (Polymethylsilsesquioxane). Momentive says that as the film was still intact and uniform compared to MQ resin types of products, the results suggested that SilForm FR-10/SilForm FR-5 fluids, fluorinated MT resins, improved the durability of color cosmetics.

In addition to their applications for use in sunscreens, foundations, color cosmetics and skin care, SilForm FR-10 and SilForm FR-5 fluids can also be used in hair care formulations to add body and flexible hold.
