Silicones are being increasingly used to give added functionality and sensory properties in the key areas of hair care, sun care and make-up, a report by the Freedonia Group finds.

In this the second of a two part look into the market research group’s latest findings on the silicones market for cosmetics and personal care, we look at how increasingly targeted and technically advanced silicone-based solutions are being developed to meet formulators’ needs.

For make-up silicone based ingredients are increasingly to enhance the performance of products such as eye shadow, foundation and lipstick, particularly to give enhanced color properties to products.

On top of this silicone ingredients are also being used to bring about enhanced water-resistance, increase the durability of make-up applications, as well as making products such as foundation and eye shadow easier to spread.

Enhanced ant-wrinkle properties for foundation

In particular silicone-based foundations are said to have an enhanced ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, while avoiding the clogging of pores, making them ideal for anti-aging products.

In sun care products silicones enhance all-important water-resistance, while also enhancing SPF ingredients, in turn leading to lower dosage levels and ultimately contributing to reduced formulation costs.

As with hair care and make-up products, they also target moisturization properties in sun care products, which is becoming increasingly important in this category.

The hair care challenge

In the hair care segment silicones have traditionally been used to give hair shine, as well as giving the hair follicle increased manageability.

However, the report also points to the fact that what has held back its further take-up in this category is the fact that for certain hair types it can weigh down the hair follicle, making it more difficult to style, suggesting that ingredient developers should work on developing a solution to this issue to give way to increased reach.

In the US market, fluids, which is the category that mainly concerns silicone materials used in cosmetics and toiletries, is likely to grow by 5.0 percent in the four year period, to reach a total value of $1.7bn.

Demand for silicones specifically used in the cosmetics industry is predicted to grow by 6.3 percent to reach $570m by 2016, adding to a sustained period of growth during the period 2006 – 2011, despite other silicone categories being significantly impacted by the economic downturn.
