BASF launches anti aging active from botanical plant leaves
BASF’s beauty care division has launched a new anti-aging active, derived from botanical plant leaves that the company says will protect the skin’s collagen, aiding firmness as well as maintaining epidermis structure.

CollGuard features an extract from the leaves of the Davilla rugosa or ​Dilleniaceae botanical flowering plant found in tropical and sub-tropical regions and is said to be a “preventive anti aging solution ​capable of protecting collagen against glycation, free radical attack, and collagenase while restarting collagen synthesis.”

Many related innovations are already available on the market, however Frank Freiler general manager of ​BASF beauty care solutions points out; “With CollGuard, our objective was to provide a unique natural cosmetic ingredient that targets all aspects involved in the collagen life cycle​.”

Tried and tested

BASF carried out in vitro studies whereby the company says CollGuard showed the ingredient’s anti-glycation activity, helping to preserve the structure and functionality of collagen fibers.

In addition, the active is also said to have exhibited a high level of protection against free radical attacks and significant protection against collagenase at a “2 percent concentration level.”

The efficiency test results also highlighted CollGuard’s ability to preserve newly synthesized collagen and support the structure of the fibrillar network while helping to stimulate the synthesis of functional collagen, by demonstrating an ability to increase the amount of functional type 1 collagen by a factor of three.

CollGuard preserves newly synthesized collagen, supports the organization of the fibrillar network , and succeeds in providing long term support for retaining firmness and encouraging the maturation and assembly of collagen.

The ability of the active to encourage the renewal and protection of collagen while ensuring its optimum functionality and organization is especially useful in achieving and maintaining a youthful appearance. It could also be useful in after-sun care.
