Chicago-based outsourcing firm RR Donnelley has expanded its packaging capabilities with a number of recent acquisitions of packaging companies in the US that target expansion in cosmetics and personal care.

"We continue to expand our capabilities to serve our customers' packaging and merchandising needs," commented John Paloian, RR Donnelley's COO.

Product labeling

With its latest acquisition of Ohio-based Stratus Group, RR Donnelly’s operations have been extended to include packaging and product labeling for industries including cosmetics and personal care.

"Stratus Group's superb decorative labeling and paperboard resources offer an excellent complement to our prime label, corrugated and other global packaging capabilities”, said Paloian.

"With the exponential growth in media choices available to consumers, point-of-purchase packaging plays an increasingly important role in our customers' marketing mixes".

He added that the company expects to be able to immediately expand Stratus Group’s operations and offer its customers further solutions as its facility is close in proximity to RR Donnelley’s kitting and fulfillment centers.

Stratus Group offers packaging services including manufacturing custom pressure sensitive label and paperboard packaging products for beauty and health, food, beverage and other segments.

Custom design

RR Donnelley also acquired Illinois-based packaging design company Genesis in September, which provides custom packaging including designing, printing, die cutting, finishing and assembling for industries including cosmetics and personal care.

Genesis enhances our ability to serve consumer packaged goods producers, packaged food and beverage producers, and a range of other customers [and] complements our platform with a centrally located facility, a range of capabilities and deep experience,” elaborated Paloian.

The recent acquisitions made by RR Donnelley have served to increase its profits as its third quarter ended September 2011 results showed an increase of 7.8 percent to $2.68bn in comparison to the same period in 2010.
