Germany-based chemicals company Symrise has launched a new active cooling agent to fulfil consumer demand for 'refreshing and gentle' cosmetics.

Expanding its portfolio of cooling substances, the active ingredient Frescolat X-cool gives skin care products a long-lasting cooling effect, according to Symrise.

Consumers today expect intense refreshment and care from their vitalising cosmetics,” commented Cécile Kalem, Symrise Paris. “Demand for products with refreshing effects has been increasing globally for years.”

In-vivo testing

According to Symrise, the ingredient works quickly, cooling skin immediately after application, and lasts up to 30 minutes.

The company claims to have conducted in-vivo efficacy tests assessing the intensity of the cooling effect of leave-on and rinse-off applications of the agent on a group of trained panellists.

Looking at test results provided, whilst this seems true for both applications in terms of cooling rapidly, the rinse off application showed a steady decline in intensity of the cooling effect after eight minutes and had no noticeable effect after 15 minutes.

This is in comparison to the leave-on application test which indicated noticeable cooling intensity of three on a scale of ten, at the end of the thirty minutes.

One meant an indication of no perceivable cooling effect and ten a very pronounced cooling effect.

Frescolat vs placebo

The rinse-off application test assessed the intensity of foaming gels with 1 per cent Frescolat versus a placebo, on the face of 12 panelists.

The cooling effect was noted within the first couple of minutes, with an intensity of greater than six measured by five to six minutes.

The leave-on application test evaluated the intensity of the cooling effect of standard oil in water formulation with one per cent Frescolat versus the placebo, on the face of 20 panelists.

Within five minutes the cooling effect was measured at an intensity of six.

A cooling ingredient for topical applications, it is suited to formulations with acidic to neutral pH, between four and eight.

According to Symrise, it can also be used in shaving products, deodorants, face, body and hair care, as well as in after sun care.
