Arch Personal Care senior research chemist Philip Ludwig spoke to CosmeticsDesign at the recent in-cosmetics event to highlight the benefits of producing its new red rice derived ingredient from tissue culture.

Called Regenistern Rice, the ingredient is derived from a type of red rice that is found in the Himalayas, but as Ludwig explains, early research found that harvesting the rice wild led to the reduced efficacy of the plant's active properties.

The new ingredient is based on Arch's Regenistern technology, which Ludwig explains, allows the company to harvest just small amounts of the rice, which can then be re-produced using cell tissue cultures.

This not only preserves the efficacy of the plant extract, but it also helps to significantly reduce the overall carbon footprint of a plant that would otherwise have to be harvested before being shipped to the manufacturing facility for extraction.
