Croda Europe introduced its latest approach to skin moisturisation aimed at reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier whilst regulating water loss, at the ingredients show in Milan.

According to the company, the moisturising complex, DuraQuench IQ, has been proven to form a tightly packed lipid layer on the surface of the skin, compared to a control sample, and this repeat distance is comparable to that formed naturally by the skins lipids.

Tests carried out by the ingredients firm showed that comparing a control sample to DuraQuench IQ also provided evidence that it forms a thicker bilayer on the skin, similar to that found within healthy skin.

“While there are a number of moisturising products on the market, DuraQuench IQ offers long lasting hydration while protecting against the drying effects of soaps and detergents and imparts temperature and humidity responsive properties for optimised moisturisation benefits,” said Victoria Pepper, marketing coordinator at Croda Europe.

Croda Europe, which took a large team to the in-cosmetics show in Milan, launching the new ingredient as well as picking up an award for its UV filter technology, told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com that the in-cosmetics show launch was a great success for DuraQuench IQ.

“DuraQuench IQ was very well received at in-cosmetics as this product is on trend (high tech moisturisation/health and wellness) with a substantial data package to show efficacy,” Pepper continued.

The company believes the ingredient is set to make a big impact on the industry, particualrly given that it has put a significant amount of research and evalution into its development in an effort to back up claims.

Extensive testing

“Its ability to significantly improve the visual signs of skin dryness was evident in the results of a panellist Moisture Efficacy Test (MET), which showed how a DuraQuench IQ formulation improved skin dryness versus a control formulation,” Croda said in a statement.

The DuraQuench IQ test example then remained significantly more moisturised than skin treated with the control formulation, once application was ceased after a three day period.

“Not only did these tests demonstrate the superior moisturising benefits of DuraQuench IQ compared to the control, they also proved that it performs at a significantly faster rate throughout the treatment phase, demonstrating that DuraQuench IQ imparts quick and long lasting hydration to the skin, which continues even when it is no longer applied,” Croda explained.

The UK-headquartered company also evaluated consumer perception of the new complex in a panel study which monitored responses before and after application.

The results of the study showed that 71 per cent of panellists preferred the formulation containing DuraQuench IQ, commenting that they observed a significant improvement in skin smoothness and skin radiance.

Award winner

Croda Europe also won the Cosmetics & Toiletries Innovation Research & Development award at the show for its Solaveil SpeXtra UV filter.

Solaveil SpeXtra is a range of titanium dioxide dispersions that offers a broad spectrum UV protection, enabling the formulator to make globally-approved, high SPF sunscreen products that conform to EU guidelines for UVA protection using this single active.

Along with the launch of its moisturising complex, Croda said this was the key highlight of the in-cosmetics show for the company.
