Grant Industries has launched a silicone wax designed to improve the feel of clear, water-based products.

The ingredient, Gransil VX 406 (INCI name: Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane) has been designed for use with leave-on skin care products and the company claims it can deliver a lubricious, silky feel.

[Gransil VX 406] helps give good glide and slickness to a product without being greasy,” Grant Industries’ John Gormley told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

Water-based products

Designed for use in water-based products such as toners, serums and gels, the ingredient has the unique characteristic of remaining clear in such formulations, the company claims.

According to Grant, this is due to the polymer structure that has a balanced ratio of lipophilic silicone to hydrophilic polyether, providing 100 percent water solubility without oil droplets or a hazy appearance.

“Silicones are not usually water soluble so to make on that has enough silicone in it to have an effect, yet remains clear, has been quite challenging,” Gormley explained.

When formulating very clear products, there are lot of ingredients that you can’t add, he explained, before adding that Gransil VX 406 allows for formulators of such products to improve the feel of their products after use and therefore their consumer acceptance.

The company advises the ingredient to be used at between 2-3 percent in formulations for maximum cost efficiency.

While it has been designed for use in water-based products, Grant said the ingredient is also compatible oil-in-water emulsions and water-in-oil emulsions.
