Ingredient development company BioActives has acquired a majority equity position in oral care provider Perfect Smile Corporation.

Perfect Smile incorporates BioActive’s MicroActive CoQ10 formulation into its products, and together the companies developed the Perfect Smile Oral Care System, which comprises toothpaste, mouthwash and chewing gum.

Dan Kagan, a managing partner at BioActives told CosmeticsDesign.com USA that the formulation was licensed by Perfect Smile for use in its oral care products four years ago, and the companies have continued to work together on projects.

“As we worked more closely with Perfect Smile we realized that it would be a valuable investment opportunity since [the company] is cutting edge and forward thinking with respect to developing products that fight gingivitis and promote oral health,” he said.

Tapping into market knowledge

The parties involved have also formed a strategic alliance, which will allow BioActives to tap into the market knowledge of Perfect Smile.

“By being able to work more closely with Perfect Smile we can better understand retail customers and both the opportunities and challenges of marketing consumer products,” said Kagan. “This will not only help us in oral care but also better understand the challenges our other commercial customers have as well,” he added.

According to Kagan, this will provide an opportunity for BioActives to better integrate its ingredients into consumer oral care products and pave the way for the development of other lines of personal care and supplement products containing the formulation.

MicroActive CoQ10

MicroActive technology is used to improve the bioavailability of lipophilic compounds, and according to BioActives, MicroActive CoQ10 is shown to be more universally bioavailable than any other advanced products currently on the market.

The company says the patented formulation is more suitable for water-based products such as toothpaste, although Kagan highlighted that it can also be used in skin care applications.

MicroActive CoQ10 can be used in anti-aging face creams,” he said. “Lack of cellular energy, free radicals, inflammation and weak muscle tone can all contribute to aging skin. MicroActive CoQ10 is easily absorbed and regenerates skin tissue.”
