Cognis is targeting the growth potential of the skin whitening segment with a new ingredient from its actives division Laboratoires Serobiologiques.

The new whitening ingredient, Radianskin, is being marketed as a potential alternative to the more traditional ingredients of hydroquinone and kojic acid and according to the company is well tolerated by the skin.

Acting at the melanocyte level, the active helps to reduce the amount of the melanin released by melanocytes, explained Laboratoires Serobiologiques’ communications manager Anne-Laurie Rodrigues.

Protects against UV damage

In addition to being well tolerated by the skin, the company also claims it can have a photoproective effect.

UVB rays can decrease the cell viability and increase levels of the pro-inflammatory factor PEG-2, explained Rodrigues.

Radianskin was found to have a good anti-inflammatory effect and can help protect the epidermal keratinocytes from UV-induced damage, she said.

The ingredient is also easy to formulate as it is stable and doesn’t have an effect on the odour or colour of the final product, the company said.

In addition, Radianskin’s compatibility with a wide range of ingredients including aluminium salts, vitamin C, AHAs and sun filters opens up formulation possibilities.

“It is suitable for a wide range of skin care applications, such as skin whitening and anti-ageing products including those for sensitive skin,” said Rodrigues.

Opportunities in men’s care and body care

Furthermore, the company believes the market will expand from the facial whitening and anti-ageing base to take in new product families.

“The skin whitening market is already growing rapidly, but we believe that this product can give it further stimulus towards developing innovative line extensions within the men’s care and body care categories,” she added.
