Switzerland-based Verdan, a supplier of natural crystal deodorant products to the cosmetics industry, has expanded its portfolio with the launch of natural potassium alum powder.

The powder is the active ingredient in crystal deodorants, and can be used as an odor preventative in body sprays, creams, powder and liquid roll-on products, according to the company.

Launched on back of demand

Increased demand for natural cosmetics and personal care products has led cosmetics manufacturers to target consumers of natural products with new natural deodorant formulations, said Verdan.

The powder is marketed as an alternative to synthetic potassium alum, which is commonly used in crystal deoderants.

“In recent years, the crystal deodorant market has become increasingly saturated with artificial potassium alum and ammonium alum made from synthesizing aluminum hydroxide with sulfuric acid,” said Verdan founder Francis Verdan.

Inhibits bacteria growth

Creating the powder involves micronizing natural potassium alum stone into a fine powder, said the company, a process whereby potassium alum stones are crushed and ground.

The powder works as an odor preventative by inhibiting bacteria growth in sweat by forming an invisible topical coat when applied to the skin, which then prevents odor from occurring, according to Verdan.

Potassium alum has deodorixng properties not seen in mainstream deodorants and anti-perspirants, said the company, which either mask odor with fragrances or prevent the production of sweat by using alcohol or aluminum compounds to shrink pores in the skin.

Products available for private label

Verdan supplies natural crystal deodorant products in both a customized format and for private label.

In addition to the new powder, its portfolio boasts several offers products made from potassium alum stone, including crystal deodorant body spray, stone, stick and roll-on.

According to the company, beyond its use in crystal deoderants, the astringent properties of potassium alum stone means it acts as a skin firming and toning agent, and is also effective in relieving razor burn.
