Oekametall’s new standard mascara packaging line that uses DuPont’s renewably-sourced polyester resin, Biomax PTT1100, was showcased at Luxepack Monaco last week.

Germany-based Oekametall, a provider of packaging solutions for the cosmetics industry, is the first company to use Biomax PTT in cosmetics packaging.

Describing the decision to use the resin in their mascara packagingJasmine Hamida, Oekametall’s packaging innovation manager told CosmeticsDesign: “We respond to an increasing demand for sustainable packaging especially on the part of customers with natural and organic cosmetics which would like to obtain the Ecocert certification.”

Biomax PTT1100 (PolyTrimethylTerephthalate) is a polyester-type resin with a renewably-sourced content and performance similar to PBT (PolyButyleneTerephthalate) and PET (PolyEthyleneTerephthalate).

The resin offers a natural scratch-resistance and gloss; its durability eliminates the need for an additional solvent-based protective layer to guard against scratches or more chemically-aggressive cosmetic formulations.

As a result, in addition to contributing to sustainability awareness through reduced use of petroleum-based ingredients, cost-savings during production can also be realised.

Claudia Tillmanns, European account manager at DuPont Cosmetics Solutions, explained to CosmeticsDesign that the benefits of the resin are three-fold.

“This development matches the consumer trend to reduce the environmental footprint via bio based packaging materials, while also offering superior aesthetics and good chemical resistance versus most formulations.”

Tillmanns added that the awareness created by Biomax PTT at Luxepack Monaco will likely be the catalyst for future use of the product in cosmetics packaging.

The injection-mouldable resin is especially suitable for use in compact cases, cream jars, thin-walled perfume caps and mascara caps, said DuPont.

Oekametall has plans to extend their range of products that use Biomax PTT by using the resin in lipstick packaging, according to Hamida.
