French chemical group Rhodia launched two ingredients for shampoos and conditioners at in-cosmetics in Munich this week.

One of the ingredients presented at the trade show was a conditioning guar polymer called Jaguar C500, designed for formulators who want to create weightless volume.

“Volume and shine continue to be key hair care trends,” said Sébastien Méric, VP of home and personal care at Rhodia Novecare.

Natural volume

Derived from the seeds of guar beans, Jaguar C500 is also targeted at manufacturers of natural personal care products.

Rhodia said the guar bean extractalso has a number of other features for formulators including foam richness and texture, increased deposition of actives such as silicone and a light feel. In addition the company claims the product is highly competitive in terms of cost.

Skin care to hair care

The other ingredient being presented at the show was Miracare SLB which was originally launched early last year as a skin care ingredient.

The cleansing surfactant is now available for hair care formulations. Created mainly for high quality and treatment products, Miracare SLB enables formulators to incorporate high levels of oils and active ingredients into products.

“Miracare SLB makes it easier than ever to formulate richly textured, high performance products with natural or essential oils, fragrances and insoluble actives,” said Sébastien Méric.

The liquid crystal surfactant makes it easy to fine tune formulations and make products that offer outstanding repair, moisturizing, conditioning and protection, according to Rhodia.

Rhodia said the product is a rheology control technology based on surfactant liquid crystals that form a close pack network of Multi-Lamellar Vesicles, which consist of concentric surfactant shells of lamellar surfactant bi-layers.

In addition to the two ingredients launched at the show, Rhodia has extended its portfolio of cleansing and conditioning products following the acquisition of specialty surfactants manufacturer McIntryre earlier this year. How the acquisition will affect Rhodia’s personal care operations will be explored in an upcoming article.
