Innospec has launched a clear and sulphate-free surfactant at In-Cosmetics in Munich that the firm says reproduces the lathering feel of a luxury soap bar.

The new isethionate ester, Iselux, can be used in place of traditional sulphate surfactants in cleansing products such as shampoos and shower gels. Innospec claims the new ingredient is ideal for formulating products that require dense, luxurious and long-lasting foam with a quality after-feel.

Product selling points

Innospec spokesperson Samantha Gardner told CosmeticsDesign.com that the sulphate-free claim is big in the US while in Europe the clarity of the Iselux will be a selling point.

She said the new surfactant also produces a creamy foam that can be rinsed away leaving the skin feeling smooth and free from irritation or stickiness.

Iselux can be added into formulations at different concentrations to suit different budgets and pursue different goals.

Compared to sulphate-based rivals

Innospec claims the foam produced is comparable to that created by Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) in terms of the density of bubbles. Meanwhile, stood against Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES) the company says the ingredient matches it for foam stability and instant foaming.

Regional business director Phil Boon said: “To compete in the high value personal market you need ingredients that offer something different. Iselux gives you that.

“For the first time formulators can design natural looking, crystal clear liquid personal care products that are exceptionally luxurious to use in the bath or shower yet are gentle on the skin.”

Iselux is currently available in the US and Innospec expects it to become available later this year in Europe pending regulatory approval.

The ingredient joins Innospec’s existing range of surfactants, emollients, conditioning agents and biodegradable chelants.
