Symrise will be launching a range of natural active ingredients for cosmetics products in 2009, thanks to its collaboration with two biotechnology companies.

The Germany-based fragrance and flavours specialist started working with biotechnology company BRAIN, and the natural product specialist AnalytiCon, back in April 2007.

BRAIN brought its cellular based screening practices to the table and AnalytiCon added its natural product compound libraries, with Symrise expected to bring the resulting products to market.

The partnership has now borne fruit and Symrise has announced it has the exclusive marketing rights to two groups of natural active ingredients that it will launch in 2009.

Clinical tests have highlighted the potential of both groups of ingredients which will be used primarily in deodorants and sensitive skin products.

Speedy development

This partnership is a new way of working for Symrise, and one that the company appears pleased with.

“Working with companies such as BRAIN and AnalytiCon, both leaders in their fields, has complemented our own R&D activities and made a major contribution to our innovation pipeline after a remarkably short development phase,” said Achim Daub, head of Symrise’s scent and care division.

AnalytiCon head Lutz Müller-Kuhrt also highlighted the unusually short development time. “The results far exceed our expectations,” he said.

In only 18 months we managed to develop two ‘first-in-class’products, all the way form assay development and high-throughput screening to in vivo efficacy tests,” added BRAIN CEO Holger Zinke.

The alliance between the three companies is set to continue according to Symrise, which hopes the partnership will firmly secure it a place as a leader in the natural ingredients sector.
