Paris-based active ingredients player Sederma has launched a topical slimming ingredient named Phytosonic that targets the problem of hypertrophy.

Based on ultrasound cell lysis, the ingredient is able to selectively detach hypertrophied adipocytes without destroying them, Sederma claims.

The treatment targets the hypertrophy of adipose tissues, which in women commonly affects the thigh area, leading to swelling and uneven deposits of tissue that can make the affected areas appear smoother and significantly reduce swelling.

Although hypertrophy can affect a number of areas of the body, including the breasts and muscles, Sederma says that it is targeting the thigh and knee area with the new Phytosonic ingredient.

Targets specific areas

Developed in the Sederma laboratories, the ingredient targets these specific areas, slimming not only at a cellular level, but also at the skin tissue level.

According to the company, clinical studies carried out on 27 female subjects who applied a cream containing a 3 per cent dosage of the ingredient both morning and night for two months showed encouraging results.

The results of the study showed that the ingredient was particularly effective on stubborn cellulite, decreasing adipose tissue infriltration into the dermis by between 17 – 69 per cent.

Ultrasound measurement

The study results relied on ultrasound measurements, which also helped to demonstrate a ‘very significant’ decrease in adipose tissue thickness in both the thighs and the knees.

The results showed that adipose tissue thickness was reduced by 8.5 – 18.6 per cent, while the tissue thickness of the knees was similarly reduced by 8.2 – 20 per cent.

Put in the grand scale of things, Sederma says that on average the ingredient managed to reduce the circumference of the thigh area by an average of between one and two cms.

Topical slimming approach

Topical slimming products have become increasingly popular in both Europe and the US in the past couple of years, with some of the biggest names in the industry, including L’Oreal and Beiersdorf, launching major products in the category.

To feed the growth in this market, ingredients players have been busy developing and launching increasingly sophisticated active formulations that target a range of slimming-related problems, including cellulite and water retention.

Last year another French ingredients player, Silab, came to the market with an anti-cellulite solution, Pro-Sveltyl.

The formulation is said to be suitable for all slimming body care products thanks to its ability to significantly reduce irregularities of the skin surface resulting from cellulite.
