Momentive launches new multipurpose silicon-based ingredient
highlight the launch of its new multipurpose ingredient Velvesil FX
at the In-Cosmetics show in Amsterdam.
Produced in a gel form, the formulation combines the company's expertise in the fields of both silicones and boron nitride chemistries to produce significant improvements in spreadability and processability.
Momentive says that the inclusion of its silicones technology in the gel has helped to enhance the benefits of boron nitride powder, which is used in cosmetics products for a variety of applications, but is particularly known to have excellent lubrication qualities.
To further build on boron nitride's functionality, Momentive claims that the inclusion of silicone in the formula has expanded tits potential uses still further.
Enhanced color cosmetics and skin care
The company says that this development means that Velvesil FX gel can be incorporated into a spectrum of color cosmetics and skin care products to provide performance benefits combined with the sensory attributes of silicone.
Boron Nitride is a powder, which means that, when combined with other ingredients it can sometimes be difficult to mix, ultimately making processing more difficult.
The inclusion of the silicone results in a formula with a smooth, silky finish that is easily combined with a range of other ingredients, because it allows the boron nitride to be dispersed more easily and virtually no dusting, the company claims.
All of this means that the ingredient provides a variety of potential applications, including a base ingredient for foundations and eye shadow, as well as bringing anti-aging and oil control benefits to skin care products.
Combing silicone and boron nitrade qualities "In developing Velvesil FX gel, we have leveraged Momentive's extensive expertise in boron nitride and silicone chemistries," said Beatriz Blanco, global marketing manager for Momentive.
"It is a multifunctional product that effectively delivers the benefits of both materials in a single formulation."
In fact, because of its multifunctionality, the company says the formulation should prove to be compatible for products with 'line-blurring' effects, encompassing products such as a foundation with anti-aging properties.
Last year Momentive announced that it would be expandning its presence in the personal care segment by focusing and enhancing its technological capabilities in the field of customized ingredients.
The company's ambitions were boosted after its acquisition by investment company Apollo Management lin December 2006, a move that has injected further investment funds into the company.
As a consequence Momentive has released a number of silicone based ingredients solutions aimed at both the hair care and skin care segments in the course of the last year.
