Bergamot oil producers get EU aid

Bergamot oil producers have been approved for €6.2 million EU
funding, in a move aimed at helping to sustain this small but
important industry that has become an important ingredient for a
number of cosmetics products, reports Simon Pitman.

The EU says that the approval is subject to compliance with a number of conditions, which the Italian authorities will have to meet within the next two months.

Bergamot is produced in one specific area of Calabria, Italy, and is valued for both its distinct, earthy aroma, as well as its medicinal qualities. Although a popular ingredient, farming and extracting the oil is a relatively expensive and complicated process that requires time and significant resources.

The EU says that the measures provided by the scheme cover investment in holdings which produce bergamot and in processing and marketing units, start-up aid for producer groups, research work, dissemination of information, the introduction of product quality-control systems and advertising campaigns.

Bergamot is one of the most popular essential oils and has become an important ingredient for many fragrance manufacturers as well as helping to give Earl Gray tea its distinctive flavour.

As well as fragrances it is also used in a number of skin care products, with leading cosmetics companies such as The Body Shop incorporating it into various product lines.

Currently The Body Shop carries a Bergamot and Lavender fragrance range, which is formulated according to a Mediterranean theme. The company says that it uses organically produced Bergamot, which is sourced through a fair trade programme aimed at alleviating high levels of unemployment in the region.

As well as general skin care, it is also used to treat a number of specific conditions, including acne, boils, as a deodorant, eczema and oily complexions.

In its undiluted form it is an extremely strong substance and it is recommended that it is only used in very small quantities. As an essential oil it should be taken with a bath, where only several drops are required for the desired affects.
