Research being done by Merck Consumer Care at its Solar Research Center in Memphis is focused on addressing consumer demand and this has seen the development of two new sunscreen products.
The two products are Coppertone AccuSpray and Coppertone ClearlySheer, and were evaluated by consumers at each stage of the development process, to address consumer-identified desires for light and fast absorbing sunscreen lotions and clean application from sunscreen sprays.
“Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen every day is critical to helping keep skin healthy,” says Dr David Leffell, Professor of Dermatology and Surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and consultant to the makers of Coppertone products.
“Regular sunscreen use helps protect against the damaging UV rays that can cause premature skin aging, which can contribute to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots and the breakdown of skin elasticity.”
The problem, researchers have found, is that many people are reluctant to use sunscreen as much as they should due in part to their perception about the aesthetics of some sunscreens.
The response to this was to produce ClearlySheer as a lightweight sunscreen in both lotion and spray form to deliver broad spectrum protection that is absorbed quickly.
AccuSpray is a new patented and targeted spray technology providing a continuous controlled spray. This was designed to help apply sunscreen with precision and reduce mess and waste.
Evolving consumer needs
“Rapidly evolving consumer needs and routines demand innovative sun care solutions,” says Patricia Agin, Ph.D., Director of Scientific Affairs and R&D Leader at the Coppertone Solar Research Center.
“Based on our conversations with consumers, these new products will offer options they are asking for, including sunscreens that will fit into their everyday lives to provide the protection they need.”
The Coppertone brand has also stated that its research and development team developed these multifunctional products to not only provide sun protection and moisturizing benefits, but also fit into consumers’ daily skin care regimens, whether at work, the beach, the pool or taking part in sport.
