Natural glycolic acid used for skin rejuvenation
The colorless natural acid is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) which is found in sugar crops and used in cosmetics due to its capability to penetrate the skin.
“It [glycolic acid] works as a highly effective exfoliant to slough off dead skin, which results in a more youthful glow and minimizes the appearance of fine lines,” said Peter Bohm, CEO of Ariel Laboratories.
“When combined with salicylic acid, glycolic also combats acne and when we add our non-kojic and non-hydroquinone whitening compounds, they become very effective in reducing skin blotching caused by hyperpigmentation.”
Skin care continues to be a ‘hot category’ as market analyst Mintel has pointed out in its key trends for 2011, as people are always looking for new ways to beautify themselves.
In its latest research the market analysts suggested that based on last year's figures, the skin care market is set for recovery this year.
“Two thousand and ten was a year for rebuilding, with new skincare product launch activity almost matching pre-recessionary levels," explained Vivienne Rudd, senior beauty analyst at Mintel.
Ten percent active system
Ariel Labs’ 10 percent active glycolic skin care system consists of a cream exfoliant; an acne control wash with salicylic acid; a facial scrub that contains aluminum oxide, a non-abrasive ingredient commonly used in dermabrasion; and hydrolite, a non-hydroquinone product with skin-lightening properties.
The New Jersey company says the products can be used in the home, either individually or as part of a complete skin care regimen.
“It’s our intention to market the 10 percent glycolic formulations to plastic surgeons, dermatologists, aestheticians, and other healthcare professionals and to have a reduced glycolic percentage line available for a brand to market directly to consumers,” explained Bohm.
Use of AHA exfoliants, such as glycolic, not only benefits skin in the short-term, but in long- term usage as well, according to Ariel Labs.
