US-headquartered Lipo Chemicals had its new skin care product named the best ingredient by a panel of judges at the in-cosmetics show in Milan, where it is being showcased for its ‘innovation.

Liposhield HEV Melanin is a patent-pending ingredient designed to protect the skin from high energy visible light (HEV).

“We are delighted to have received this award and had LIposhield HEV Melanin recognized for its innovation,” Lipo Application and Technical marketing director Europe, Helen Mahot, told CosmeticsDesign.com USA.

“HEV light has been shown to penetrate deeper than UVA and generate 50 percent of the reactive oxygen species [ROS] that are formed upon exposure to sunlight,” she explained.

This may cause photosensitivity disorders and solar urticaria, which is a skin condition in which cases of hives can appear on both covered and uncovered areas of the skin due to exposure to UV light. HEV light can also promote uneven pigmentation.

Liposhield HEV Melanin is a fractionated melanin, tailored to specifically to absorb light in the range of 400-500nm with minimal absorption in the beneficial red wavelengths.

Penetrates deeper than UVA

“It has been discovered in the last few years that HEV light is dangerous and actually penetrates deeper than UVA,” Mahot continued.

The ingredient is designed to be used in sun care products and daily use moisturizers, as well as in foundation and other skin care products, and Lipo claims it can be easily colored.

“It is not a UV filter but is designed to complement filters in these products and provide added protection,” Mahot concluded.

The ingredient was one of eight being showcased at the innovation zone at the FieraMilano expo center in Italy, and won gold ahead of NeoPharm who came second with its natural skin stimulant Defensamide.

“All the entries were whittled down to eight very-deserving finalists based on how well their ingredients combine science and product features in a way that demonstrates substantial benefits to manufacturers and end-users when compared with existing ingredients,” explained Cathy Laporte, in-cosmetics group marketing manager.
