What's next for this international giant? Two top Coty executives discuss growth strategies—across market strata, retail platforms and around the globe. Michele Scannavini was appointed, in March 2002, President of former Lancaster Group Worldwide, the prestige division of Coty Inc.
In 2005, with the acquisition of Unilever’s prestige fragrance business, Scannavini drove the integration of both divisions – Lancaster Group and LCI Cosmetics International (formerly UCI) to create a new global business unit: Coty Prestige that clearly defines the unit’s function of offering distinct, innovative and quality products through a selective distribution network.
Based in Paris at the headquarters of Coty Prestige Worldwide, Scannavini directly reports to Bernd Beetz, Chief Executive Officer of Coty Inc.
Scannavini brings to Coty a diversity of experience that makes him uniquely suited for Coty Prestige. Prior to joining Coty, he was Chief Executive Officer of Fila Holding S.p.A. in Italy, the sport apparel and footwear company. During his tenure at Fila, he significantly increased revenues, repositioned Brands and product offerings, and enhanced distribution strategies.
As President of Coty Beauty, Mr. Semerari manages all of Coty's brands available in mass distribution in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. As part of his role, Mr. Semerari seeks new business ventures and collaborations, as well as oversees the continued development and expansion of the portfolio. He also serves on the Executive Committee of Coty Inc.
Mr. Semerari started his career in 1986 with Procter & Gamble, where he held a series of positions of increasing responsibility. While at P&G, he worked in the marketing department for personal care, oral care, skin care, paper and detergents, in both Italy and the United Kingdom. In 1999, he moved to LVMH as International Marketing Director of Parfums Christian Dior in charge of marketing development for fragrance, make-up and skin care. He then joined Guerlain in January 2002 as President and CEO leading the company to steady and profitable growth.
Prior to his appointment at Coty, Mr. Semerari served as the President and CEO of Sephora Europe since October 2007. In this role he fueled his knowledge of retail, was responsible for 12 subsidiaries and an extensive store network. During his tenure, Sephora grew rapidly in pre-existing markets while geographically expanding into new countries. In 2008, Sephora scored record gains in market share and profit, and continued this strong trend into the first quarter of 2009.
