Researchers reported that copal resin, a sustainable non-timber forest product, enhances the quality and consumer appeal of cosmetics, with the body gel formulation increasing skin hydration by 9% and 73% of participants reporting improved elasticity.

A recent study published in the journal Cosmetics has provided new insights into the development and consumer acceptance of cosmetic products formulated with essential oil extracted from copal resin, a non-timber forest product (NTFP). The research, conducted on a facial cream and a body gel containing this natural ingredient, presents promising results regarding the quality, safety, and consumer appeal of these products, especially for manufacturers seeking sustainable, natural alternatives in the cosmetics industry.

Sustainable sourcing and environmental impact

The copal resin used in the study was harvested from agroforestry systems, a sustainable practice that encourages the preservation of biodiversity and supports local communities in rural areas of Mexico. Agroforestry involves integrating trees, such as those producing copal resin, into farming systems, which enhances ecological sustainability by maintaining forest ecosystems while also generating income for indigenous populations.

According to the study, “the use of non-timber forest products like copal resin diversifies resource use, promotes sustainable practices, preserves ecosystems, and generates income.”

This focus on sustainability is increasingly relevant as consumers demand eco-friendly products. By supporting agroforestry, cosmetics manufacturers can tap into the growing market for natural and sustainable cosmetics, while contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.

Product quality and consumer acceptance

The study assessed two products: a facial cream and a body gel, both formulated with copal essential oil. To ensure product quality and safety, the researchers followed strict protocols aligned with Mexican official standards, conducting a variety of tests including microbiological, irritability, and stability tests.

Both products passed the necessary tests, exhibiting high safety standards and demonstrating a shelf life of two years. “Microbiological tests indicated that both the cream and gel were below the allowable limits for microorganisms, confirming strict adherence to established cleaning protocols,” the study reported.

This finding is particularly important for personal care product manufacturers concerned with ensuring that their products are safe for human use and free from harmful bacteria.

Consumer acceptance of the products was also a focal point. The research team conducted hedonic tests, which revealed that factors such as hydration, aroma, spreadability, and irritability were crucial in determining how well these products were received.

The study highlighted that “hydration, the most influential variable, is essential for skin function, appearance, and well-being,” adding that both products improved skin hydration, with the body gel showing a 9% increase in hydration and the facial cream showing a 10% increase. Furthermore, 73% of participants reported improved skin elasticity after using the body gel, compared to 50% for the facial cream, largely due to the copal oil’s anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties.

Natural ingredients and market potential

The formulations were enhanced by other natural ingredients like cucumber extract, royal jelly, and rice oil, which helped improve product performance. The study noted that the combination of these ingredients with copal essential oil not only contributed to hydration but also reduced sebum production, making the products appealing to consumers looking for non-greasy, hydrating solutions.

With natural cosmetics expected to grow by 15% compared to the 5% growth in conventional cosmetics, this research is timely for manufacturers seeking to differentiate their offerings. The findings suggested that copal resin could serve as an effective raw material for cosmetic formulations, promoting both product efficacy and sustainability.

The study concluded that “copal essential oil emerged as an ideal raw material, promoting sustainable practices and generating income for communities.”

Relevance for cosmetic manufacturers

For manufacturers in the cosmetics and personal care sector, this study offered valuable insights into how natural ingredients like copal resin can be incorporated into products to meet consumer demands for sustainability and efficacy. The research underscored the potential of agroforestry-sourced materials to diversify product lines, contribute to environmental conservation, and enhance consumer satisfaction by providing effective, natural skincare solutions.

In an industry increasingly focused on natural and sustainable solutions, the findings of this study highlight a viable path forward for product innovation. As natural cosmetics continue to gain market share, products formulated with copal resin may offer a competitive edge for manufacturers seeking to align with consumer preferences for eco-friendly, high-performance personal care products.
