The deal is Lubrizol’s latest effort to meet growing customer (and end-consumer) demand for sustainable cosmetics and personal care inputs.

“We expect this partnership to allow us to develop replacements for silicones in beauty products and help us fulfill our mission to help the world Live Better,” Doug Nalley, North America Business Director of Beauty and Home at Lubrizol Life Sciences (LLC), tells the press.

“We’re proud,” he says, “to work with Advonex to further expand our growing portfolio of natural and sustainable ingredients.”

Lubrizol picks up bio-based beauty ingredient tech in Advonex deal

Advonex Industrial Corporation is a privately held chemicals maker based in Brockville, Ontario. The company, founded in 2012, specializes in the sustainable ingredients for not only the cosmetics and personal care industry but also for industrial sectors, including the auto industry.

The company’s ingredient technology is based on a patented oil stabilization process, which, according to the company website involves “removing the oxygen and recombining the molecules.”

By running oils like soybean, canola, coconut, palm, corn, and even algae through the process, Advonex creates various waxes and emollients for use in beauty product formulations.

For Advonex the LLS deal is expected to increase exposure of its alternative ingredients in the beauty marketplace: “Working with LLS Beauty provides Advonex with the market expertise and global distribution that is needed to address the growing demand for alternatives to petroleum-based ingredients in the beauty and personal care market space,” says, Chad Joshi, President and CEO of Advonex, in the recent press release about the deal.

“This agreement,” he says, “demonstrates LLS Beauty’s on-going commitment to sustainability and accelerates our ability to enter and serve the personal care market.”

Lubizol continues to expand sustainable cosmetics and personal care ingredients portfolio

Like many cosmetics and personal care ingredient makers, Lubrizol has been investing to acquire and otherwise develop more environmentally sustainable ingredients.

Just over 2 years ago (in March 2019), Lubrizol completed the acquisition of Laboratoire Phenobio, a France-based company expert in supercritical water extraction. The acquired tech “involves extraction of a broad range of phytoactives that are not normally obtained with only water,” according to a press item posted on the Lubrizol site.

When the acquisition deal closed, Deb Langer, Lubrizol Vice President and General Manager of Personal, Home and Healthcare, remarked, “Lubrizol continues to invest in innovative technologies to offer step change formulations for the personal care and life sciences markets.”

And she explained that, “with this acquisition, Lubrizol customers will have access to novel botanical extracts compliant with ECOCERT and COSMOS standards that meet the naturality and sustainability expectations end users are requiring on a global basis. Additionally, our preferred partners will have access to final formulations using this exciting new technology.”

Now this year, Lubrizol sought to partner with Advonex, at least in part, because, the company’s “hydrocarbons…replicate the sensory experience silicone provides in skin care, hair care and skin cleansing products,” an advantage many brands and formulators are seeing from plant-based ingredients.
