More than one K Beauty brand recently launched new products showcasing freeze-dried skin care technology—a likely sign that a new beauty ingredient format is about to get very popular.

While the brands purport to be using patented and exclusive technologies, the basic premise behind freeze-dried skin care is definitely not new. Freeze-dry or Lyophilization technology is commonly used in pharmaceuticals, in the food industry, and has shown up in beauty before too.

For instance, in 2007 a France – based company Lyofal (a division of SynerLab) introduced its freeze-dry tech to the beauty marketplace.

More recently, in 2019, Aesthetician Georgia Louise launched a line of freeze-dried skin care products under the name Georgia Louise Pure Molecule. (Read more about that freeze-dried beauty innovation in this item written by Rebecca Dancer for allure.com.) And that same year, slowly frozen collagen on display at in-cosmetics North America made this publication’s Trend Spotting coverage. (Read about waterless and solid beauty innovations, including collagen balls made by Jiangsu JLand Biotech, here on Cosmetics Design.)

Today, Beauty Pie has a product called SuperDose C Vitamin Freeze Dried Ampoules listed on their site; but the product is currently sold out.

Freeze-dried ingredients and products aren’t just novel; they make sense in today’s beauty marketplace as more and more manufacturers and brands are creating solid or waterless products. And since they are preservative-free, they fit into the microbiome beauty or microbiome-friendly product space too.

What’s new in freeze-dried beauty?

On Tuesday, the luxury skin care brand Saro de Rue (a division of Seoul, Korea – based P&J Medesthetics Inc.) announced the launch of its Freeze-Dried Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Anti-aging System here in the States. And a company called Weibo Hi-Tech Cosmetics launched a full portfolio of skin care made with freeze-dried ingredients at the recent in-cosmetics Asia event.

Mimi Kim, Founder of Saro de Rue, summarizes her brand's launch this way, saying, “We partnered with a Korean pharmaceutical research and development lab with worldwide patented technologies to adapt methods proven in the medical field into a revolutionary anti-aging skincare product. We launched Saro de Rue with a belief that these revolutionary innovations that help achieve beautiful skin should be available to everyone.”

The brand’s Freeze-dried Hyaluronic Acid Anti-Aging System is sold in 14-day and 60-day packs and comes with a dropper bottle of Pure Activator, a liquid product formulated with niacinamide, adenosine, sodium hyaluronate, and botanical extracts.

The new Weibo Hi-Tech Cosmetics product line comprises 7 freeze-dried serums, 7 freeze-dried masks, and a freeze-dried eye mask. The company press release explains the eye mask in a bit of detail: “The product takes the form of an eye mask with solid serum, developed through the use of the Freeze-drying (FD) and Flash Release Technology that is exclusive to Weibo Hi-Tech. The technology preserves the eye serum in a solid state, thereby greatly boosting the activity of its ingredients. The eye mask instantly blends with water to promote transdermal absorption, and helps firm and rejuvenate the skin.”
