Under the leadership of Board Chair Keech Combe Shetty, the Personal Care Products Council is for the first time inviting member companies like Kao, Mary Kay, and L’Oréal to sign onto a civic engagement pledge.

Already those beauty makers and several others have signed the PCPC’s Beauty Counts…Time to Vote Industry Pledge. And in the month remaining before this year’s US general election, even more Personal Care Product Council members are expected to take part.

“Beauty and personal care businesses thrive when employees are engaged citizens and actively participate in their communities,” says PCPC President and CEO Lezlee Westine, in today’s remarks to the press.

“Our members,” she says, “are among the first to come together as an industry to support employees by providing flexibility and resources to help them be active citizens.”

Cosmetics and personal care industry leaders want you to vote

The PCPC Beauty Counts…Time to Vote Industry Pledge is straight forward and asks cosmetics and personal care manufacturers and suppliers to not only ensure that their teams have the time needed to vote in the 2020 general election, but also that they actively encourage their teams to do so. Here are those 2 pledge points as stipulated on personalcarecouncil.org:

“Provide employees work flexibility or time off for the November 2020 general election. This includes civic engagement activities, such as voting, volunteering, working at the polls, or any other appropriate activity.”

“Encourage our employees to exercise their civic responsibility, including registering to vote, strengthening a culture of civic participation.” (And the PCPC suggests that employers direct employees to vote.org to register and find other resources.)

As of this writing, 18 of some 600 PCPC member companies have signed the pledge: Beiersdorf, Chanel, Clarins, Combe, Edgewell Personal Care, The Estée Lauder Companies, Firmenich, Givaudan, Johnson & Johnson, Kao, L’Oréal USA, Mary Kay, P&G, Revlon, Sanofi, Shiseido, Takasago, and Unilever. (As more beauty makers sign the pledge, updates to this list can be found here.)

Beauty has a history of leadership

Keech Combe Shetty, Executive Chair of Combe, has been involved with the PCPC for years; and just this past August, she was elected to serve as the organization’s Board Chair.

Known as an influential and compassionate business leader, Combe Shetty told the press in August that “as our country continues to face difficult and uncertain times, I’m honored to help lead PCPC as we navigate our changing world, working to educate policy makers, legislators, regulators and most importantly our consumers, about our dynamic, innovative and scientifically sophisticated industry,” as Cosmetics Design reported.

The Beauty Counts…Time to Vote Industry Pledge is one of Combe Shetty’s first initiatives. “Our employees deserve the necessary support to take time to vote and fulfill their civic duty safely,” she says in this week’s media release about the civic engagement pledge. “Our country thrives when all voices are heard and all votes are counted.”

And she outlines why the PCPC is the right organization to lead this pledge, saying, “PCPC and the beauty industry have always been ahead of the curve not only creating innovative products but also looking at innovative ways to conduct our businesses.”

“This pledge is just another example,” says Combe Shetty, adding that in beauty, “we don’t wait around to be told we should be good corporate citizens. We do it because it’s the right thing to do.”
