Purell hand sanitizer gets new packaging, expediting supply to front-line workers and businesses

Late last week, GOJO (the manufacturer of Purell) announced the use of alternative personal care product packaging solutions to make it possible for the brand to fill demand swiftly.

In an announcement on the company website, GOJO shows two new sanitizer bottle designs that are being shipped to front-line workers and businesses during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The new packages are more like conventional hydrogen peroxide and dish liquid bottles than hand sanitizer bottles. But filling them will allow GOJO to get more hand sanitizer to front-line workers and businesses reopening safely than would otherwise be possible given current supply chain limitations. 

“In response to the pandemic, we are packaging a portion of our products in different containers to speed up how quickly trusted PURELL products are available to specialized markets that include first-responders and essential workers,” ​explains the company’s online announcement.

“Bottle SKUs 9636-12-S and 9747-12-S [shown above] are authentic PURELL Advanced Hand Sanitizer Refreshing Gel products, packaged and labeled specifically for shipments that support the urgent need of frontline workers and businesses.”

Hand sanitizer counterfeiting is also a concern for Purell

In the same announcement, Purell took care to show images of all its current temporary hand sanitizer packaging options and included SKUs, UPCs, ounce sizes, and bottle descriptions.

This is because GOJO is encouraging businesses to help confirm that they aren’t receiving fake Purell products: “Unfortunately,” ​the announcement notes, “we've also become aware that counterfeit products have entered the marketplace. We encourage any business who receives packaging that looks unfamiliar to check their product UPC code against this set of authentic PURELL products.”

GOJO continually adapts its business to meet demand during COVID-19

For months now GOJO has been working to manufacture and fill hand sanitizer at more the double last year’s volume. And in June, the company bought and leased new facilities to keep pace with demand for hand sanitizer and surface disinfecting products.

“We believe the world will forever be changed by this pandemic,”​ Carey Jaros, GOJO President and CEO, told the press earlier this summer when GOJO expanded production capacity; “and we see this translating to a sustained increase in awareness of the importance of safe and effective hygiene practices.”

Jaros and her team have been making a lot of changes to keep Purell in supply for the industrial and consumer groups who need it most. Beside the facility expansion, production increase, and packaging pivots, GOJO is also working in collaboration with school districts around the country​ to ensure they have access to both hygiene products and disinfectant, as Cosmetics Design reported last month.

“GOJO and our distributor partners are actively working directly with as many school districts throughout the country as we can to provide the Purell Hand Sanitizer, Purell brand Healthy Soap, and Purell Surface Spray they need to reopen with confidence,” ​Jaros told the press in August, adding that the company has “rapidly developed and launched some new solutions designed especially for schools.”
