Today, the clean beauty brand announced the issuance of two US patents for two different ingredient technologies and that one of those is now available to other skin care, hair care, and personal care brands.

Codex Beauty is led by Barbara Paldus and backed by Sekhmet Ventures (where Paldus is a Managing Partner). The brand has rapidly become known in the clean beauty space for its science-backed approach to natural beauty.

And now the proprietary Codex Beauty preservative system, known as PreservX, is not only patented here in the US, it’s available for other brands to use under license.

“We believe that PreservX is a breakthrough in the domain of beauty product preservation, as it is not based on any fossil-fuel derived ingredients and all of its constituents are edible,” says Paldus in today’s media release.

“We believe that this provides a new level of sustainable safety for skincare, especially for products geared towards babies and young children, who can accidentally ingest skincare products through nursing or sucking their hands,” she says, adding, “We are excited to share this platform with the beauty industry.”

Does PreservX fill a whitespace in the beauty preservatives market?

The PreservX preservation system relies on fermentation and salt-based inputs. It’s used in all of the Codex Beauty products that are formulated with water. And it is, according to the Codex Beauty media release, not only food-grade but also “technically edible.”

The system lends broad-spectrum preservation to topical hair, skin, and nail product formulations. As Marc Cornell, cosmetic consultant and one of the named inventors on the PreservX patent (US No. 10,721,937), says, “Nature provides the world with beauty via a combination of symmetry and synergy. The development of PreservX followed a similar pathway by blending nature-identical chemistries to provide broad spectrum anti-microbial activity.”

“We are delighted that the US Patent and Trademark office has acknowledged this innovation by granting the patent in under a year from first submission,” says Cornell.

The Codex Beauty hydrating BiaComplex is the beginning of a whole new product line

The other patent Codex announced today—US No. 10,682,306—is an emulsion of botanical infusions.

“BiaComplex is unique because each plant extract addresses skin hydration in a different way,” explains Tracey Ryan, Master Formulator and GM of Codex Beauty Europe. Ryan is also one of the named inventors on the BiaComplex patent.

“It not only moisturizes and hydrates the skin,” she says, “but [it] helps the skin retain/lock-in this moisture, thereby enhancing both its health and appearance.  If the skin is also compromised, it helps to alleviate symptoms associated therewith.”

The Bia Complex ingredient technology is already in one Codex Beauty product formulation: the Bia Skin Superfood. And the brand has plans to launch a full collection of body care products formulated with the Bia Complex in 2021.
