Today, the flavor and fragrance maker announced Dreamwood, a biotech-made biodegradable ingredient reminiscent of Mysore sandalwood.

The new Firmenich ingredient is a sign of things to come from the company, according to comments Julien Firmenich, Vice President Sales, Ingredients, Perfumery, made in today’s press release about the Dreamwood launch.

“Dreamwood,” he says, “is the cornerstone of sustainable innovation and represents the future of our ingredients business, integrating positive consumer benefits at the core level of product composition,” adding that, “This innovative captive opens new creative territories for sandalwood fragrances, with the full benefit of responsible business, in one ingredient.”

Firmenich is making natural, sustainable fragrance inputs with white biotech

White biotechnology is a term that refers to the sort of biotech now commonly used to create molecules for use in cosmetics, personal care, and fragrance formulas or blends; it is biotech at an industrial scale, using feedstocks and microorganisms to generate ingredients.

Dreamwood isn’t the first biotech ingredient from Firmenich. The company launched Clearwood in 2014, Ambrox Super in 2016, and Z11 in 2018.

Sarah Reisinger, Vice President of R&D and Biotechnology at Firmenich, explains the company’s ingredient strategy as it pertains to biotech saying, “Consumers are looking for renewable, sustainable solutions.”

“Individuals and companies alike,” she says, “are examining how they can do their part to minimize their impact on the earth. Ingredients produced via biotech are one way of doing this.”

The new ingredient scent is described as warm and creamy. And it’s meant to stand in for Sandalwood notes previously sourced from the natural environment. “By being sustainable and affordable, Dreamwood is reviving natural sandalwood notes for modern perfumery creations. Dreamwood reveals its full naturalness and deep creaminess especially in heart and base notes,” François-Raphaël Balestra, Principal Perfumer and Director of New Ingredients Discovery at Firmenich, tells the press.

Dreamwood also, according to today’s press release from Firmenich, offers cosmetic benefits similar to those attributed to Sandalwood: “Because of its antimicrobial effect and soothing properties on skin cells, it may have a positive benefit in skin care products for special needs, including blemishes,” states the release.”
