Tuesday morning in New York City, the organizers of Cosmoprof North America hosted a press preview event, featuring 25+ brands and manufacturers that will be at this summer’s show. Cosmetics Design was there, and these are the formulation, packaging, and device trends that captured our attention.

This year’s Cosmoprof North America event is set for July 28 – 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada. And, the show promises to be as impressive as ever, highlighting the newest and newsiest in consumer and professional beauty. The event this summer will also include a show-within-a-show, with the addition of a Cosmopack NA event running in tandem with the main show.

Earlier this week, the show organizers hosted a preview event for members of the media at New York City’s Italian Trade Commission on the Upper East Side. Here are some of the highlights:

Algae hair care
Marine-derived ingredients are one of the trends Cosmetics Design is watching closing this year. (Learn more in our trends forecast video from December 2018.) And at Cosmoprof in July, L’Alga Ocean Technology will be showcasing a line hair and scalp care products formulated with a blend of 5 algae that the brand calls the AlgaNord 5 complex. As industry and consumers alike look to algae and the marine world in general as a new source of ideas, ingredients, and technologies, a brand like L’Alga is well positioned to meet demand.

Green plastic
Companies like HCT are innovating to make beauty packaging more sustainable. And at this week’s Cosmoprof preview event, the company was showing a few new designs, including new nearly mono-material color cosmetics compacts. The HCT design includes a snap hinge and a hole in the bottom where consumers can easily pop out the aluminum pan for recycling—or refilling—when the product expires or runs out.

Developed with the clean beauty consumer in mind, the new Vero Compact is available in three materials: PET (as a recyclable option), 100% post-consumer recycled PET, and a bio-plastic option. At Cosmoprof in Las Vegas this summer, HCT will feature not only the Vero Compact but other clean beauty packaging options as well as newly developed product application tech for eye care, skin care, and color.

Plant water
Water continues to be topic of import for beauty makers, whether it’s the source or volume of water that goes into a product formula, the amount of water used in the ingredient processing and product manufacturing process, or the amount of water a consumer uses to apply or remove any given product. And most beauty makers are innovating in one or all of these areas to meet sustainability goals and contemporary consumer expectations.

D’Alchémy, a vegan luxury skin and body care brand based in Poland, is focused on the quality and source of the water in their product formulas. The company formulates with plant hydrosols rather than water from any municipal or natural water source (like rain, aquafer, or spring). Launched in 2018, the brand is already global, with retail distribution in Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and beyond as well as having a presence on several ecommerce sites.

Multitasking tools
Multifunctional skincare is nothing new, but beauty tech innovator Nicole Chau believes that her multitasking skin care device (launched earlier this year at the CES) will meet consumer expectations head on. The brand is La Luer and the device, known as Mira, promises to detox, tone, lift, and infuse in 5 minutes or less.

As the brand’s site describes it, Mira is “6 technologies, 4 treatments, 1 device.” All 4 treatment settings use 3 light-based technologies: red, blue, and green photo-facial lights. And the various settings also incorporate sound wave technology, sonic vibration, ion infusion, heat stimulation, and EMS microcurrents.
