7 summer makeup trends that beauty manufacturers need to know, James Vincent The Makeup Show
Cosmetics Design caught up with The Makeup Show’s top beauty expert James Vincent to find out what looks makeup artists are creating now that will be influencing trends well in to 2019. Cosmetic chemists, product developers, and brand owners might find a bit of inspiration in his list too.

“Makeup trends start at the tip of a pro makeup artists brush,” believes Vincent, “and with over 20,000 makeup artists and 200 brands passing through The Makeup Shows doors each year, the trends seen here are what will set the stage now and through 2019.”

The Makeup Show has been running for twelve years and is the go-to event where makeup artists can connect with pro brands, take part in educational workshops, hear from experts first-hand, and network with other artists. The show is held in five cities across the US each year: New York, Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Orlando. The next edition of The Makeup Show is taking place in Orlando, Florida—September 15 and 16. (Read about this year's New York show on Cosmetics Design.)

Here, Vincent names and discusses trends he’s seen emerging at recent editions of the show, the ones he considers most compelling. And he mentions particular branded products that artists affiliated with The Makeup Show are reaching for and recommending to their clients.

1. Celebrity Skin “Natural skin is a must….” which means using “makeup that is barely there but has a soft matte finish. A sheerer coverage complexion with strategic warmth and shine is flattering for any face,” says Vincent. And he notes that makeup artists often opt for long-wear or waterproof formulas. “A few of our favorites,” says Vincent, referring to the team behind The Makeup Show, “are Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Foundation and MAKE UP FOR EVER Waterblend. For additional hold and perspiration control, try Alcone or Mehron anti shine and sweat products as a primer.”

2. Turn Around Bright Eyes This trend calls for “bold, beautiful pops of color…used as an allover eyeshadow, a bold swipe of eyeliner or a bit of brightly colored mascara to take the trend to [an] everyday look.” And, Vincent suggests “Danessa Myricks Color Fix for a long wear pro favorite that can be used as cream shadow, liner, mascara or lip. Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliners add a touch of bright color with a simple application. Colored Mascara from Kryolan is an excellent pro classic available in his from bright neons to bold jewel tones.”

3. I Love Rock N Roll For this trend think creatively about “neo graphic liner.” “Pair a bold black liner with any lip, from barely there to a daring red. Traditional cat eyes are a bit blockier this season, or [a] smudgey cat eye for a…modern look.” Products that make sense here include, “Stila Microtip Stay All Day Eyeliner [which] allows you to create any shape effortlessly. Stillazzi Borderline Gel Eyeliner…for its easy to apply, super durable formula.”

4. You Sparkle and You’re Beautiful “Glitter is never going away…we are seeing easy glitter looks along the eyelid as liner or shadow.” Products Vincent suggest here: “Mehron’s new Echo Pressed Glitter Palette for a no mess, easy option that works well on its own or over shadow. Stila Glitter and Glow Liquid Eyeshadow has a large variety of beautiful summer shades that apply with one swipe. For a more ethereal glitter experience, look to Danessa Myricks Beauty, Kryolan or MAKE UP FOR EVER.”

5. Orange Crush“Sun kissed or Sunburnt Orange eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks are a gorgeous choice for a kiss of color,” says Vincent, pointing to these products in particular: “Crown Brush Bronze and Glow palette is an affordable option that world for any skin tone….Cozette Eye Shadows for a wide range of peach to orange shadow options. Urban Decay and NYXProfessional Makeup have unlimited options for orange lips in shades ranging from peach and coral to trafficcone orange.”

6. Intergalactic Planetary “Holographic shades lend themselves easily to lipgloss; but…try it on the lids and cheeks as well. Pat McGrath Labs’ Mothership Palettes have every shade…with the most beautifully pigmented formula. Urban Decay Disco Highlighter or Kevyn Aucoin’s Neo Blushes make holographic highlighting simple.” And “Inglot Cosmetics’ [has a good] holographic lip gloss.”

7. Crystal Blue Persuasion “Crystals and metals are used for clearing and holding energy, and the beauty industry is embracing them like never before,” affirms Vincent. For this trend he puts forward products like “Danessa Myricks Beauty’s Gold Enriched Primer to pull in the healing and rejuvenating power of gold.”

And Vincent himself is affiliated with a brand and makeup artists’ agency known as Rebels and Outlaws that he believes “leads the charge for bringing wellness and makeup together in a magical way.” His suggestions from product line include the “Artists and Angels Potion…the perfect toner for summer skin or to clear energy with organic hydrosol of Neroli, essential oil of blood orange and Tiger Eye for a calming and spiritually charging effect.”
